“The Giver” by Lois Lowry is a famous book that is recognized by many people around the world. It describes a boy reflecting on unknown memories of his utopian society. The book is so well known, that in 2014 a movie was created based on it. The movie is not exactly the same as the book but it is somewhat similar. The plot of the movie is very different from the book, especially in the ending, his escape, and his motivations for escaping. Because his motivations changed, the theme and tone of the escape changed. The escape in the book was planned out by the Giver and Jonas and was kept secret from the public. In the movie, Jonas and the Giver planned his escape after finding a map. Before Jonas left, he went to Fiona to ask her to leave with him instead of asking the Giver. Fiona then denied his request so he took Gabe with him. In the book, Jonas left the day before the Ceremony but in the movie, Jonas left in a random part of the year. In the movie, Asher tried to keep Jonas from running away and notified the Elders. Everyone knew that Jonas left in the night but in the book, nobody knew until the next day. During the movie, Jonas jumped from the edge and struggled to get to “the rocks”. Jonas needed to pass the rocks to release all his memories to the public in the movie. Jonas had to reach Elsewhere to release the memories to the public. Because Fiona helped Jonas in the movie, she almost got released but when everyone receives the memories, she is saved. In the book, Jonas’ intentions for running away are that he feels love and other emotions and he wants people to feel what he’s feeling.
