This book invoked many areas of shock and surprise as a lot of events that happened did not happen as I would have expected them to in my own culture, but some events exposed responses or reactions similar to those in my own culture. I will incorporate a few examples that I found interesting or appalling. I will begin with how stunned I was to learn that Baba knew Hassan was his son but was still willing able to use him as one of his own servants. Although the way it was represented in this book in my opinion was at times cruel and absurd, this is something I see quite often in many, even in my culture but not on the same level of rejection. For example as mentioned in the book several times Islam says “there is a way to be good again”, Christians believe you never were good or perfect human beings are born as sinners. Islam draws a distinction between the faithful Hassan, and the “sinful” Amir. Most Christians would disagree and say that Hassan and Amir are the same in the eyes of our Lord and Savior as not matter how great the sin we can be forgiven. Also as reflected above regarding Hassan’s loyalty I have begun to evaluate values and beliefs I have bestowed into my own life and my children’s life. I realized that this a trait that many children as well as adults within my own culture do not often exhibit. I want nothing more than to be sure that both myself and my children exhibit such an incredible value. Another example of loyalty that was revealed in this book was Hassan and his relationship with his father baba. Although he felt like his father thought he was a coward, Amir did not leave his father’s side even as he became a grown man and even on his death bed. I was able to do some much needed reflection of my own morals and values and what I am instilling in my kids after completing this
