Denver Broncos Mile High Stadium The Sports Authority Mile High Stadium is home to the Denver Broncos in Denver, Colorado. They were founded on August 14th, 1959, when Bob Howsam was awarded an American Football League franchise. Bob Howsam started his business career as an owner of the Denver Bears in the Major League Baseball (MLB) in 1948. In 1953 he acquired the Kansas City Blues and moved them to Denver. Then later sold both the Bears and the Broncos in 1961 to Phipps and Cal Kunz. During their ownership the Broncos won their first Super Bowl in 1978 which increase the Denver Broncos population which was called “Broncomania”. In 1981 Phipps sold the team to Edger Kaiser. Then later sold 60.8% of his share in the company to Pat Bowlen …show more content…
In 2004, “a jury ruled in favor of Kaiser and a federal judge decreed that Kaiser was entitled to purchase back 10% of the Broncos using the identical purchase terms offered to Elway”(Wikipedia). Then four years later in appellate court the judge ruled that the contract didn’t violate the original right of first refusal agreement. Since Bowlen took control over the Broncos they have the highest winning percentage in the entire NFL surpassing the San Francisco 49ers after the 2015 season. Before the Sports Authority Mile High stadium got its name, it was once just called the Bears Stadium. In 1948 with a capacity of 17,000 the Bears Stadium was built. The stadium was financed by private funds to house the Denver Bears and later the Denver Broncos. When the Denver Broncos started playing in the Bears Stadium they wanted to increase the seat capacity due to the amount of fans that were attended the games. In 1960, the Stadium was renovated increasing the seating capacity to 34,000 people. During the “mid 1960s city leaders wanted to build a new football/baseball stadium, but voters turned down a bond issue to build a new stadium” (Stadiums of pro Football). Why, because they need construction workers to build the new stadium, “however, few new jobs would be created long term” (Denver Post). They also believe that this new stadium would bring world class venues such as concerts, soccer and other activities during the off-season. So, with all these good economic benefits the team can convince the taxpayers that their contribution will provide a public good benefit for them. Aside from the economic side it also provides a public good benefit as well. The Broncos have won “15 division titles, and played in eight Super Bowls, following the 1977, 1987,1989,1998,2013, and 2015 season. They won Super Bowl XXXll, Super Bowl XXXIII and Super Bowl 50” (Wikipedia). The Denver Broncos have a track records of winning games and with this new stadium, that the taxpayers would be paying for, they would definitely would be benefiting for the fans. “Economically, experts say, the stadium would provide few benefits for the six-county metro area. Football fans contribute little to the local economy. They park, walk directly to the stadium where they spend their money, and leave. A few out-of-towners contribute by patronizing local hotels and restaurants” (Denver Post). During a typical football season there are only 10 games a season. Those games typically draw about 750,000 people. In my opinion I do believe that the Broncos have some kind of power over
