A tragic hero is defined as a character who is noble in nature, has a tragic flaw and discovers his fate by his own actions. According to the novel Okonkwo is a tragic hero. Okonkwo’s flaws were his fear of being weak and like his father. He looked at his father as being a deadbeat, weak and lazy. He even characterized his father as being woman like. Okonkwo got angry very easily when dealing with things that he didn’t like such as a weak man. Showing love and affection wasn’t something that he did very often, not even to his family. He thought that it would make him look weak if he showed affection. Okonkwo portrays really violent stubborn and irrational behavior so he isolates himself. It was a tragic loss for the village. While at the funeral of Ogbeuefi Ezeudu, Okonkwo’s gun went off and killed Ogbeuefi son. His son was a British messenger and killing someone with his occupation was a crime. Consequently, him and his family had to be exiled. He wanted to defeat the British in every way but he had lost the support and respect of his clansman because of his actions. Without the help and support of his village he knew he wasn’t going to be able to defeat the British alone and he was defeated in the end. So much had changed so quickly in his life and everything had just got the best of him. He committed suicide and that was very disgraceful just like the same type of death his father suffered.
Okonkwo is the protagonist and tragic hero of this story. He was a man who let the fear of looking weak get the best of him and he ended up doing things he didn’t want to do. His deadbeat father was the blame of how he ended up being in life. His life went downhill really fast. He dealt with things back to back and he didn’t see things getting any better. A tragic hero is defiantly what he
