A seventeen year old girl just had her seventeenth birthday. For her birthday her parents said she could have breast implants because she had been complaining about her breast size all her life. This costed 15,000 dollars. A few days later she was playing soccer. The ball came at her fast and hit her silicone implant. She had no idea it burst. The next month was spent in the hospital due to the silicone bursting, the hospital bill costing more that the original breast implants. Some people believe plastic surgery can improve their health. However many teens experience side effects, later health problems or complications during or after surgery. Furthermore there should be an age restriction when getting cosmetic surgery. One example is, “Liposuction is the procedure cited most often for problems,” explains Michael J. Olding, chief of plastic surgery at The George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C. “Combined with a tummy tuck, it has even more potential for problems. The longer the operation, the more blood-letting, the more potential there is for complications, “such as blood and fat clots and cardiac arrest” (Friedman). This quote talks about how liposuction can lead to many health problems like blood-letting, clots, and cardiac arrest which are very important and possibly deadly. Teens should not have to face these problems that could lead to death just to have plastic surgery. Teens should not be able to get cosmetic surgery because they are too young to face these health problems that could lead to death. In addition Jane Friedman explains the situation: “Often, women don 't even know that a silicone implant has broken. It doesn 't lose its shape but it leaks silicone into the lymph nodes, the breasts, the brain, liver and lungs,” Zuckerman says, “Cat scans have shown lesions in the brain from the silicone.” This evidence is important because it tells teens that they might have a health conditions that could lead to death and they would not even know it! However this can be proven wrong because Jane Friedman explains, “the FDA is considering once again whether silicone breast implants should be allowed back on the market. The agency had banned the devices for most women in 1992, after widespread health problems were reportedly associated with the implants, and manufacturer Dow Corning paid large damage awards to implant recipients who took the company to court alleging connective-tissue disorders and other illnesses.” This disproves the statement because this talks about how breast implants created disorders and illnesses with their implants. Not only did it happen to one person, but according to the quote it happened to most women and was widely spread with the implant.This is significant because the breast implant could lead to serious illness or even death. If it burst and most women do not even know that it bursts. Overall, teens should not be allowed to have plastic surgery because it can cause deadly health issues, the cost of cosmetic surgery is too much and could go to waste due to a wrong operation. Or it can bring down their self esteem just as it was supposed to bring it up because of social media.
