Success is a term used to represent positive achievements in whatever yardsticks you decide to choose for its measurement. These yardsticks can conform to societal standards or can even be derived from personal choice. Most importantly, these measurements revolve around what purpose we set for ourselves. In order for us to set these yardsticks we must really understand, what we see as our purpose. Through “How Will You Measure Your Life” by Dr. Clayton Christiansen we are able to gain new insights on how important identifying purpose(s) can be and the benefits that come from it. Yardsticks are tremendously important to every person’s life as it evaluates our improvement, regression, and efforts towards a particular goal or desired outcome. Sometimes yardsticks can be a source of stress, when for some reason we are simply not achieving something we believe we should be. For instance, a recurring goal for many is to to reduce their weight, a long with several other goals that people set. However the effort they put into achieving this goal was minimal as they had many other goals to focus on with too many distractions. At the end of the year they are unable to fulfill half of them. Instead of celebrating their achievements, they regretted their failed yardsticks that they didn’t attempt to even achieve. Without having a sense of what people see as their purpose, they are unable to determine what yardstick they should set. Instead they set unrealistic yardsticks that require an impossible feat to achieve. Through identifying our purposes, we are able to narrow down the scope of the yardsticks we set. By doing so, we allow for us to focus on incremental achievement and sustainable satisfaction.
