When you think of success what comes to mind? In sports it’s making it to the pros. In business it’s making your first million. In high school it can be as simple as acing that test you studied for all night. No matter what profession you are in, success is the desired goal.
Success is something that every person looks at differently and in America it is something that is strived for every step of the way by most typical people. The idea of success is planted in our heads at a very early age and is embedded in our culture as a part of the American Dream. Ways that success is approached are different depending on what drives a person, whether it's competitiveness or a strive for greatness. A competitive approach to success is described in Margaret Mead's essay The Egalitarian Error when she writes, "For many Americans, the concept of success is a source of confusion. As a people, we Americans greatly celebrate and admire the one who gets the highest grades, the one voted most attractive or most likely to succeed.

Success is defined as an accomplishment of a goal; however, there is the question as to what truly outlines the idea of success. The novel, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, revolves around Jay Gatsby, who is depicted as a man of great wealth. The theme, that changing your social class will lead to tragedy, is represented through Gatsby’s actions. As a matter of fact, Gatsby had to work his way up to a social class that was deemed acceptable for one person: Daisy. Daisy was his only motivation for all of his actions, which includes the parties he threw.
People have different views on what success really means. Some say success is based on money or fame. If you have a lot of money or fame you're "definitely" successful. Others say success is based on your fulfillment and overall happiness in your life. Alfred Brooks, the protagonist in the novel
What Truly defines success? Success the favorable or prosperous termination of attempts or endeavors; the accomplishment of one's goals, the attainment of wealth, position, honors, or the like. This word holds so many meaning and yet can hold so little to a person. F. Fitzgerald the author of “The Great Gatsby” provides many examples of success within the novel from symbolism to imagery the success. He gives many examples, may it be from great descriptive setting to what significance an object can hold to a character.
Success is a noun which comes from the latin root word, successes, meaning, "an advance, succession, happy outcome.” Success can therefore be defined as an accomplishment of a desired end (dictionary.com). Everyone has his or her own interpretation or definition of what they think success is, but in this interpretation, there is always a common goal at the end. That goal is to have a happy and good outcome. Willy Lowman’s definition of success was skewed, and for this, he did not achieve a happy and good outcome like he may have planned.
Each and everyone has our own idea of how success looks like. But for me, success is something that you’ve worked so hard to get to that you now have pride to have or be. But success isn’t so easy to reach. There's going to be challenges and times where one thinks they won't succeed. Its when you’ve flourished to the point where you’re happy with the placement of your life.

In our world, people usually associate success with either money, money, or money. Success shouldn’t be about how much money we earn, how good our job is, or how famous we are. Or are they stressed having second thoughts about the choices they made and unsure about their meaning in life? These people chased what they thought the definition of success was.
Success is most often defined by society as having a lot of money, fame and fortune. Many rich businessmen and famous celebrities are labeled as successful because they appear to have what society believes is the ideal life. In reality their lives aren’t everything they appear to be. Many are suffering from illnesses such as depression and stress. Many are led down the path of addiction to drugs and alcohol.
What does it mean to be Successful? Success can mean many things to many different people. Being successful means to reach all of the goals that are set ahead. Every person is different, and that means that each person sees success differently. To some people being successful could be as simple as getting out of bed or getting to work on time.
What does success mean to me? It means accomplishing things in life and reaching your goals. Everyone has a different view of what success actually is. Success also means setting a goal and reaching it in a time frame you set for yourself. For example I believe finishing college and gaining a career in a field you love is being successful because it is a goal that can be achieved.
