Why do we Need Censorship?
Have you ever wondered why you weren’t allowed to read, listen, or see a certain book, movie, or song? Censorship is “the practice of suppressing ideas” (source three) and has a long history in America. In 2013 the Kids Right to Read Project reported that the amount of books “challenged or removed from libraries had increased” (source 3). In the sources read, the writers presented in regards to censorship in the media centers. The Library Media Center Committee should not ban certain books, movies, and songs because censorship violates our right to freedom of speech. A book, movie, or song may be misinterpreted and as a result it may be banned. Every individual has the right to decide on what form of entertainment they want or not.

To begin with, banning certain books, movies, or songs violates the first amendment of the U.S constitution that “Congress shall make no law … abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press.” According to source three “The courts have …show more content…

In source three it states that, “It maintains that ‘a free society is based on the principle that … every individual has the right to decide what art or entertainment he or she wants -or does not want- to receive or create.” This supports the argument that everyone has the right to decide on their form of entertainment. Source three says that, “But standards for what is appropriate change over time and vary from place to place. Even within a community, what is acceptable to some may be unacceptable to others”. This means that what is acceptable now can change over time, and can vary the level of acceptance in different places. What was accepted in the past is rejected right now, for example slavery isn’t accepted anymore.This is also true for the opposite where somethings that had been rejected in the past are now more accepted for example gay rights weren’t accepted in the
