“Censorship is the suppression of speech, public communication, or other information.” Censorship should not be too heavy today because of people's freedom of speech and identity. Ironically, today schools censor many books that are seen as “unjust.” Censorship is widely seen today through books and real-life events. In the novel, Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, their whole society revolves around censorship. For example, Captain Beatty sums up their society as he states, “We must all be alike.” If you have not read this novel, the downfall of this society is caused by this whole idea of censorship. Montag wants to have knowledge of books; Reading is banned in this society therefore he is seen as an outcast and removed. Expected, the city they live in is not outgoing and fulfills this idea of censorship. People should always be able to be in control of their own actions and thoughts, yet people still ban certain things, such as books. Later in the novel Montag states, “There must be something in books, something we cannot imagine, to make a woman stay in burning house.” They have no knowledge of books as they are banned in society, which only makes people wonder why …show more content…

Children's literature is the primary target as they advocate for banning books that they fear could sway a child to have different ideas on certain topics. School teachers today have their own opinions on books, as one teacher in Oklahoma was presenting banned books to her class. Because the teacher presented these books, the school board is trying to strip her credentials. This is insane as the book was rightly published so it doesn't contain information that is too dangerous for a young adult to read. Another way censorship is portrayed is with children's toys.
