Warnings about digital addiction, and the negative effects it has on mental health, is a common topic in today’s society, especially since screens, abuse of power, and conformity are all cherished. These topics are all harmful to society as they harm judgment and thought. In Fahrenheit 451, the author Ray Bradbury explains these warnings through a book written in a dystopian setting where people are mind controlled, and are unable to have free expression or thought. The difference between the man who just cuts lawns and a real gardener is in the touching, he said, “The lawn-cutter might just as well not have been there at all; the gardener will be there a lifetime” (Bradbury 149). This quote from the book shows how conformity leads to lack of idea and creativity, especially in Fahrenheit where books are banned. Conformity prevents people from having the ability to bring change and diversity to the world. The last warning that Ray Bradbury portrays in the book is abuse of power which leads to a numbing society. In the book, Montag realizes that there could be something that was worth dying for in the books that he collected. “There must be something in books, we can’t imagine, to make a woman stay in a burning house; there must be something there. You don’t stay for nothing” (Bradbury 51). The realization that Montag gets showcases the idea of opposing the government for change.
