Why the Death Penalty Should be Illegal in All States

If someone commits a crime, even of a high level offense, the death penalty should not be an option of capital punishment. The use of this capital punishment is hypocritical and irresponsible. Although some argument that having the death penalty will stop future heinous crimes, there is no concrete evidence to support it. According to a survey of top academic criminological studies, 88% of experts believe that it does not work as a deterrent to murder.
Consider a criminal is found guilty for premeditated murder. They carelessly killed someone's loved one without thinking about the consequences. What if they were aware that they might face the death penalty? Would they still do it? Experts would say they would still commit these wrongdoings. “People who commit these crimes are not in a normal state of mind --they do not consider the consequences in a logical way.”, explains Dr. Jonathan Groner, MD, a professor of surgery at Ohio State University College of Medicine and Public Health, who researches the deterrent effect of capital punishment. If criminals would commit the crime regardless of the consequences, the death penalty is not an effective method.

Although the process of lethal injection itself only takes about 7 minutes, the average waiting period on death row is about 15 years. This might leave you wondering if the death penalty would save our taxpayer dollars or strain them. Logically, the death penalty is the cheaper option to keeping a prisoner for life without parole, yet all the trials and court cases leading up to the decision of the death penalty outweighs the inmate costs. If there wasn’t such a strenuous system to decide whether a person gets the death sentence or not, it would be more cost effective.
