We can see a gradual development of artistic understanding and standpoints in the west. We see a variety of viewpoints contending for place in the world of art theory. We see individualism and uniqueness contend with orthodoxy and social norms and rules of art. The growth of sciece had it’s own effect on art with cubism drawing from geometrics ideas. Essentialism and functionalism can also be seen to be related to the modern scientific ethos. A functional stripped down. Austere art, shorn of the flourishing rich forms o the baroque can be seen to arise. The skepticism of modern times and modernity, the changes we see in different areas can be seen in the ideology of post-modernity, and this has it’s concomitant in art. Thus, we can see the growth of dadaist and fauvist movements, an almost unconscious exploration of creativity and the psyche. This shifting view can create a variety of naturalistic effects in any painting and at the same help to lend perspective and verisimilitude to any painting. The cubists take impressionism to the limit to which it can go, they interpret the world to the extent of inventing a whole new one, or at any rate providing marvelous new insights and new ways of seeing the present one. The idea of messages, direct and indirect, obvious or cryptic, the idea of suggestion and innuendo is central to the project of art. Art is the most visibly obvious, but can create deep inner disguises and puzzles, challenging the onlooker to penetrate it’s secret and find the pearl within the oyster.
