The world is closing in on Esther Greenwood. She feels trapped, confused, and alone. Thus, she tries to find a way out. One day, her mother leaves Esther alone at home and Esther decides that this is her chance to escape the cruel world. She writes her mother a letter that she is going for a walk. She runs upstairs and opens her mother’s closet. On the top shelf sat her one way ticket out of life, a bottle of pills. Esther drags a kitchen chair to her mother’s closet, an earsplitting creaking noise filing the room, and grabs the pills. She walks to the cellar, each step bringing her closer and closer to her fate. Esther takes a gulp of water and lowers herself in a crawl space in the cellar. She unscrews the bottle of pills. As she takes longer and longer to decide what choice she wants to make her options are slowly decreasing. Jay Cee is Ester’s boss. While Esther is moping in her hotel room, Jay Cee asks Esther to come to her office. Jay Cee asks Esther if her work interests her. However, Ester does not love her work anymore. She tries to convince herself that writing is her passion but she isn't certain anymore. Everything interests her and she is having a hard time choosing between her many interest. Esther tells Jay Cee that she is thinking about publishing. However Esther isn't real interested in publishing she just wanted bring back her old personality. Esther has always known what she wants and how to achieve it but now she is confused, this is unnerving for her and causes her to feel aimless and depressed. Jay Cee tells Esther that she should learn several languages to have a chance at becoming a publisher. Jay Cee expects Esther to work hard, be tenacious, and to achive her dreams. Jay Cee tells Ether that the last girl who was there did not go to fashin shows and now she works at Times magazine. Esther agrees that she will try to take some language courses her next college semester but she knows that she won't. Although, Esther is unsure if she wanted to pursue writing when she was in New York but she is very disappointed when she doesn’t get into a writing course. After her rejection to the writing course her purpose in life became muddled. She stops reading, writing, and eating. These behaviors progress to thoughts of suicide and finally Esther attempts
