In business, most companies have a code of ethics that the employees go by when making their everyday business decisions and how they treat their customers. Because everybody in the world does not carry the same values, employees and employers often face ethical dilemmas. In this paper, I will discuss an ethical dilemma that a business faced and how it related to my brother, who has a disability. When I was working there as a crew leader, I had the responsibility of making sure that the carhops were following the rules that are laid out for us. Well, one day I started to notice that a carhop would fill their cup up with ice cream instead of water of a beverage during work hours, which is a “no-no”. It was a small cup and they asked me not to say anything because it was cold outside, and they needed it to cool down. So, I told them that I would let them get it that one time, but no more after that. They said okay and that would not do it again, but then a few days later I noticed that they did it again. They were stealing product from the store and I needed to report it to the manager. However, I gave them one last chance. I told them that they would have to stop, or I was going to report them. Well, the next day the carhop did not think that I was paying attention and they got some more ice cream in a small cup. After that, I did not confront. I went straight to the Assistant Manager and they proceeded to write that carhop up. The assistant manager proceeded to tell the other carhops that they would also get written up if they stole anymore product from the store without paying for it. The management did not have the knowledge that they needed to know where to place her in the working environment. The best fit for her may not have been as a carhop or a crew member, but she could have been a better fit as a cook and this would have been a reasonable accommodation. A reasonable accommodation is an adjustment made to make the system fair for the individual who has a need. Discrimination due to a speech impediment is personal to me and my family, because my brother developed a speech impediment when he started talking and it never went away. He still has it, and it causes him to have problems when finding a job sometimes. Sometimes, I believe because he personally takes the application to the company and they hear him talk, that they do not give him an opportunity for an interview, but that is only speculation. He personally knows his limitations, he knows that he cannot be a cashier, because he has trouble talking sometimes, but he knows that he can be a stocker. That is what he does now.
