The registered nurse plays a crucial role in the ethical dilemma of LT for alcoholic cirrhosis patients. To begin, the nurse will complete a thorough assessment and past medical history of the patient. In order to identify patients at risk with or of an alcohol use disorder, it is recommended to use the AUDIT questionnaire. This questionnaire is known for Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test. In addition, this assessment tool can reflect the patient's alcohol intake and how alcohol is affecting his or her life. (Fullwood, 2014). It is essential to assess patients that carry risk factors associated with liver disease, which has been recommended by The National Liver Strategy. Initially, the registered nurse must have patient-centered care for these patients, despite their own values and beliefs. It is important to build rapport with these patients from an unbiased standpoint.
There been has been an increase in alcohol consumption over the last few years, which shows it is imperative that nurses work with their chronically ill patients to manage their condition. Registered nurses can provide education to the patient and families on things, such as the stages of alcohol-related liver injury, alcohol withdrawal, and dietary recommendations.
