Definition The Kentucky Childrens Hospital has recently suffered some severe financial issues and is looking at ways to make a profit and remain fiscally solvent. With McDonald's being one of the most popular food chains in America, the board is considering adding their chain to the hospital's cafeteria. Although opening a McDonald's could be a great source of revenue during the hospital's time of financial instability, they are conflicted on whether or not it is ethical to offer such unhealthy food choices in a facility that promotes both health and healing. One being the logical value of competence. This must be one of their values because as board members it is important they value making factual decisions based on knowledge. Being both logical and competent will help them review the facts and apply them to the current ethical dilemma with both the skills and knowledge to make the best decision for everyone. Although the board may think they know what is best for the patients and staff, they will also need to take into account that their patients and staff have the freedom to pick and choose where they do and don’t want to eat. The hospital may want to create an environment of wellness but patients and staff have the freedom to go anywhere and choose whatever they may want to eat. This is a important thing for the board to remember because at the end of the day, the hospital does not have control over what a person chooses to do freely. Lastly the value they will need to consider is the moral value of humaneness. It is very important that the monetary issues be put aside for some time. The board needs to evaluate the impact allowing McDonald’s in their cafeteria could have on the health of their patients, staff and guests. They have to take into account that all things must be considered as one, and when deciding what is best for the hospital they need to decide what's also best for the people who are the reason for the hospital
