The National Organization for Human Services (NOHS) Ethical Standards is intended to serve as a guide to the everyday professional conduct of the helper. The standards are extremely broad and subject to interpretation, by the helper. Therefore, the standards are not static; they are revised as new concerns occur during the client-helper relationship.
Ethical theories are ways of telling right from wrong and include guidelines of how to live and act in an ethical way. For example when faced with a difficult situation in your life, you can use ethical theories to assist you in making the right decision. One key theory is consequentialism, which says that an individual’s correct moral response is related to the outcome/ consequence of the act and not its intentions/ motives. One type of job that helps young people is a juvenile justice counselor. Juvenile justice counselor is defined as a juvenile counselors perform one of the most vital and rewarding of social duties: helping troubled youth become healthy, happy and productive members of society. For many of these juvenile clients, childhood has been a time scarred by neglect, abuse, and lack of positive role models; a juvenile counselor can help a troubled young client jump into a positive trajectory by providing empathy, advice, and focused care. The person that I interviewed for this project is a lady that became a juvenile counselor to help the juvenile from becoming a burden on society like countless others in the past. I began college as a freshman at Central Michigan University thinking I was going to become an elementary teacher. I knew I wanted to make an impact on peoples lives but after my first week of classes, I remember telling myself becoming a teacher is not how I wanted to do it. I went to my counselor and added a social work course to my schedule. I had finally found courses I enjoyed taking and academically excelled in. Which brings me to where I am now, pursuing my degree in social work.
This essay will look at and evaluate the youth work code of ethics. It will do this by showing how the code applies to and is relevant to working with young people. Whilst doing this it will also talk about why the code was made and who it supports. This essay will then apply the code of ethics to two separate dilemmas a youth worker may come across to come up with an appropriate response to these dilemmas. By doing this it will show that the code of ethics is a vital tool that supports a youth worker to make the right decision and more importantly to give the youth worker a way to know why they made that decision.
