In his article “Should College Athletes be Paid? Why, They Already Are”, Seth Davis is able to effectively argue why Branch’s argument in “The Shame of College Sports” is incorrect through his use of rhetorical strategies to the Sports Illustrated audience. Davis’ use of ethos addresses Branch’s trustworthiness in what he includes or does not include in his article. Through his use of logos Davis is able to point out why Branch’s logic does not add up. Finally, Davis’ accusatory tone asserts his opinion of Branch’s writing, which tears down why Branch’s own article is flawed.
"There are hungry nights that I go to bed starving." says Shabazz Napier, a champion basketball player for the University of Connecticut. "There 's hungry nights and I 'm not able to eat and I still got to play up to my capabilities" ("Fox Sports"). Many student athletes share Napier 's struggle. Chris Conley, a football player for the University of Georgia, attests that if he needs clothes or shoes, he has to sacrifice his food money and face going hungry (Aued). One would think that given these unacceptable yet commonplace problems, the universities simply couldn 't afford to help their players obtain basic needs, right?

Some do not believe collegiate athletes should get paid because it takes away from the “purity” of the sport or because it wouldn’t be quite “fair” and we would then have to pay high school athletes.
College Varsity Athletes Should be Paid In this paper, I argue that college varsity athletes should be paid for playing sports that bring in revenue. In particular, College football and basketball because they bring in the majority of the revenue for the schools. The revenue accomplished by college sports programs continues to increase, due to the growth in interest of the NCAA basketball tournament and the college football playoffs (Berry III, Page 270). Throughout the past few years, one of the main topics debated in college sports is whether or not the athletes should be paid.
They play their hearts out every single night, and will do whatever it takes to get the win. If someone sacrifices his body for the better good of a team, then they should be treated like professionals would if they had done the same thing. Which is paying them some portion of the money that they just made for you. Why should college basketball athletes get paid? Pinker 's essay is about moral goodness and how it is what gives us a sense that we’re worthy people. Also, he talks about how we decide what 's morally wrong. Paying college basketball athletes was at one point moralized as bad in our country which is evident by taking a risk on a 50-50 chance, athletes accepting gifts, and athletes having agents.
College is a place for students to obtain a college degree and help them to get ahead on their “real world” careers. Athletic departments in college have become huge money incomes in the past ten years; college football and basketball are even shown on the television. This has resulted in many believing these athletes deserve to be paid for their contribution to the schools athletic income. However athletes in college are given the opportunity to play the sport that they love as well as receive a top education. For some players a $20,000+ per year tuition is not enough, they want to be paid with more than just a scholarship.
Should college athletes be paid? I think they should. I found three main reason why other people and myself think that college athletes deserve pay. One, you can just pay the sports that produce the most revenue. Two, these student athletes put in lots of work and even sometimes have to miss class to go to the sports event.
After graduating from High School one may choose to further his or her education through college. People do this for many reasons. Some people do it for professional benefits, while others do it for sports athletics. This paper will be focusing on those who do go to college for athletic benefits. Specifically, this is focusing on how these college athletes do not get paid and why they should be paid.
Another reason that it would be bad for college athletes to be paid is because the colleges would build a bad reputation for being all about the money and not about education. Already, some colleges are accused of using money to influence players into going to their school. "If a high-school football prodigy reported that he chose Michigan not for its academic quality, tradition, or beautiful campus but because it outbid all other suitors, a connection to the university’s values would be lost." (Yankah). Ever since the first college institutions were founded, they were either known for their academics or athletics.
The million dollar question; should college athletes be paid? This is an immense debate, but if you were to ask me, I would say yes, college athletes should be paid. There are a plethora of reasons why college athletes should get paid. College athletes should get paid because of the amount of time they put into their sport, the amount of money everyone else is making off of them, and their overall importance to the school. There are a myriad of reasons that people can argue the opposite way, but, the reasons they should get paid definitely outweigh the reasons they shouldn’t get paid.
College athletes are some of the most intense players in all of amateur and professional sports. These college players are even sometimes better than some professional player in their prime time in college. These college players play their hearts out to make it professionally, so that they can eventually get paid for doing something they love. Although some of these athletes just use their talents to help pay for their schooling over the years. These athletes receive many awards over their college careers and can earn scholarships for college, but as far as playing they are not allowed to be paid at all.
In conclusion, ethics in sport adversely affects a sport managers career. Some prominent ethical issues that sport management professionals deal with in the 21st century include discrimination, athletes in the public eye and drug use. The treatment of every individual should be appropriate. Their race and gender should not be a factor in the determination of a role on a specific team. Also, athletes must uphold a professional reputation, in and away from their respective sport.
Ethical issues in sports Sports in today’s world have gained a lot of importance and there have been a lot of additions to sports in the form of new rules, policies the way it is meant to be played etc. Though many stringent laws are framed, implemented and monitored there are always some sort of issues in the way the sports activities are carried out. Regardless of the level of participation some of the players resort to unethical ways of winning the event. The attitude towards the sportsmanship has changed significantly over the years.
