Carol Gilligan (b. 1936) is a contemporary ethical theorist who was among the first to challenge traditionally established moral theories. Gilligan was largely influenced by the feminist movement of her time and approached ethics emphasizing the female ethics of care in her most influential book In a Different Voice (1982). Yes it is very possible to act ethically, and most people make a conscious effort to act in such a way. Our definition of ethics as an individual is formed by our upbringing and government legal system through laws, and acceptable rules that allow us to coexist as a community. The reason why most people want to act ethically is to be accepted by their families, peer groups, and not violate the laws, which would result in a person being ostracized from friends, family and peers resulting in the possible loss of freedom. There are many ways personally and professedly to act ethical in life.
As a doctor at St. Als I received five patients in one day. All patients were in a car accident and all patients that came to the hospital under my care were vital members of our community. All needing organs replaced. While at the same time I had another patient come into the hospital who was a homeless man, who had no identification, no family. In that moment there was a thought, what if that patient could save the lives of the five I needed to save?
The third school I am addressing, virtue ethics, is the approach that emphasizes virtues in contrast to approaches which emphasize duties or consequences( Hursthouse, 2003). Virtue ethics houses three central concepts, which are derived from the Greek notions of virtue ethics. The three concepts are arete, which is virtue, phronesis, which is practical wisdom, and eudaimonia, which is flourishing and can be seen as the proper goal of human life according to Aristotle. The state of eudaimonia can be reached by practicing virtues that allow a person to flourish at its purpose.

While human rights activists and the United Nations support the freedom to express one’s sexuality as a human right, though some religions reject this in favour for their theistic values. As children, we were taught by our parents that it is wrong to lie, cheat, and steal. As we grow up and enter into the real world with some knowledge of right and wrong, we see, first hand, the importance of ethics as well as its complexity. The role of ethics in our society and in an individual’s life is very necessary because it has a large influence on today, as well as the future. We need to learn about good ethics because they guide our decisions, make us who we are, and determine our future.
