Throughout the Genocide there were currently, three ethnic groups. These groups were, Hutu, Tutsi and Twa. With Hutu having definite majority over the other groups with a population of 85% of the small country of Rwanda, leaving the Tutsi people with 14% and the Twa people with as little as 1%. Throughout the genocide, two of the three groups commenced in a genocide of hatred and revenge. These two groups where the Hutus and the Tutsis. Throughout the genocide most of the Twa people fled in scarce of the killers. The entire genocide began with the Hutu people wanting revenge on the Tutsi people for supposedly shooting down the Hutu president’s plane. The Rwandan Genocide itself began with mass killings in Kigali, (one of the main countries in Africa), but over the course of its 100-day duration, killing spread to all corners of the country. There were many different types of organizations and countries involved in the genocide. Throughout the war, the French were supplying the Hutu army with weapons and ammunition. With the French doing this, it gave the Hutus a chance to kill more and more Tutsi people throughout the genocide. Rwandan independence from Belgium would follow in 1961, which started the beginning of a Hutu-led Rwandan government, who also played a very large part in the Rwandan genocide. The United Nations played a massive role throughout the genocide, doing whatever they can to stop the mass killing throughout the time. The United Nations will be further mentioned throughout the report. During the genocide there was over more than 800,000 – 1,000,000 people murdered in the Tutsi group. Also around 500,000 ethnic Tutsis were killed throughout this time (Worldwithoutgenocide.org, 2015).
