Progression 2 Essay 2 Commercials are used to make the viewer want to buy the product being sold. It is no surprise that all commercials use the three fundamental rhetorical strategies of ethos, pathos, and logos to brainwash us. In this context: logos is the message conveyed, ethos is the speaker that gives credibility, and pathos is how the audience is affected. The companies that create these commercials make the audience feel as if what they have now isn't enough. Then they go about selling the enticed viewer a product that can fix that feeling until the next commercial comes out to restart the process.
Due to lack of communication with the British king, Jefferson must resort to methods that enhance the mind's way of thinking and amongst these methods are logos, pathos, and ethos. The American Colonies have asked for the dismissal of unfair taxes and army placement( when no threat is present), but the British king does not oblige. This commercial is full of emotions and most people, “Always change the channel because they can’t take it anymore,” (McLachlan). The most depressing parts of this commercial is the pictures because the dogs and cats are all beaten up and suffering from being abused and neglected by their owners. As a matter of fact, they are trying to make the audience feel sympathetic so they can join the ASPCA. The ASPCA tries to encourage audience monetary donation by using ethos by their tone, logos and pathos from the pictures and the statistics.
Sam Quinones utilizes ethos,pathos and logos in order to fight against false information with his credibility and logic as a journalist,to sway their opinion and channel their emotions to help rebuild the community and fight addiction. communities have suffered from the false salvation of using drugs for treatments against addiction when it only fuels the fire. On an important day in 1961, John F. Kennedy delivered a speech to the people all over the US and around the world that still gets quoted today. He made this speech to unite and make everyone come together. In his speech he used various examples of ethos, pathos and logos that really helped the speech and people come together. He as president would write the speeches himself and wouldn’t let others write it for him and is praised by many people because of that. John F. Kennedy didn’t use a lot of ethos but the ones he used were very good because it got the point across clearly.
One of the best ways a speaker can use to communicate his or her message is by using rhetorical appeals, President Roosevelt used pathos to be successful with his purpose. By popular opinion, the American people of recent years have experienced two of the three most controversial presidents in the history of the United States. Bush in his 9/11 address after the horrific terrorist attacks on the American citizens. The address was given on 9/11/01, and Bush was assuring the American people that something is being done about the attacks and that they were not left unnoticed. Bush’s address was highly effective even though it relied predominantly on the aid of ethos and pathos, and logos was primarily overlooked.
Audience, implication, purpose, ethos and so many more are all concepts that authors use in their persuasive writing to prove their point to be true. Authors: Blake Hurst, Donald Barlett and James. B. Steele and Michael Pollan all use a variety of these skills to influence the readers to agree with their side. Throughout each article, the authors use the concept of pathos, ethos and logos to show their views. These strategies are crucial to writing a good persuasive essay to really stress their point.
Application to case: Both the containment theory and the social bonding theory relate to the Columbine case, and can help us to understand why it may have happened. Both boys had their own significant issues whether they be internal or external. Looking at the containment theory first we can see that Harris had multiple problems in his external containment, he moved around a lot as a child meaning he never settles in one place. His relationships with friends were destroyed many times due to needing to pack up a move on, he one said “I have moved to different houses or locations about six times…I left behind some of the greatest friends I ever had…Loosing a friend is almost the worst thing to happen to a person” (Hong, 2011).
