Paradise Lost: Ethereal
What does being in Paradise mean? What does it look like from one person to the next? This visual of Paradise for most consists of what you believe in, whether it be a tall man with flowing long hair and long beard that comes to greet you in the afterlife and filled with your late relatives all waiting at the heavenly gates for you. Of course the flipside would be you believe in nothing after death, and when you take your last breath life as you know it ends and is surrounded by nothingness. Or maybe an unworldly force one's brain cannot begin to conjure takes hold of you in your last moments. In “Paradise Lost” by John Milton he articulates the story of how the world came to be and portrays the story of Adam and Eve, hence the title of Paradise Lost, as when they ate the apple they were kicked out of the Garden of Eden. The first mention of the word is a few lines when describing Satan. He is the first one in the “Paradise Lost” to experience this banishment from the ethereal paradise of heaven, as well as putting all the blame on him for Adam and Eves booting out of heaven. It's interesting to note that this word doesn’t always follow discussions of heaven but also follows Satan. This speaks to how he is also an unworldly creature, for instance the second use of the word ethereal appears later in Book I, and refers to Satan's “ethereal temper”. In these lines Milton is described as Satan's shield, it helps one visualize how impressive this shield could’ve been, in using the world ethereal it allows one's imagination to really run free and picture this truly unworldly shield. It also makes you imagine how giant Satan could potentially be as he is holding this impressive shield that is compared to the moon in the a line of two
