The writer and teacher, Lindsay Rosasco, creates strong diction through the use of informal word choice. Her diction style relates to her audience, who are teenagers in high school. She is trying to convince them that she is not out to get them, she just wants the best for all of them. Rosasco doesn’t use a higher level of vocabulary or more grandiose style because if she did, then teenagers could turn away from the text and she is writing like how the students talk. By doing this, she lets the readers know that she understands how they live.
Everyday Use by Alice Walker and Eudora Welty in A Worn Path are two short stories that share many similarities. One similarity between the two stories that caught my attention was protection and love. Both women take care of a child that went through an incident. In the story Everyday Use by Alice Walker, Mama is a poor African American woman who is considered to be very strong and manly.

The reader can understand the story more, and feel a connection with the book. For example, in Twain’s short story, diction is used to provide a distinction between the East and the West. The western people are described as less educated so their word choice is “dumbed down”, while the more educated eastern people, have excellent word choice. The narrator, from the East, has a distinguishing tone and exquisite word choice. When he says “I have a lurking suspicion that Leonidas W. Eudora Welty’s life was impacted by books. At the age of nine Welty’s mom got her a library card, and said she could read any book child or adult, except one. Welty always checked out the maximum number of books, and rushed home to read them and quickly get more books. Welty’s language conveys the intensity and value of these experiences, because she is well-spoken and description about her early experiences of reading books. Welty is an exquisite writer when it come to her syntax and spelling.
“It shall be my work this evening to prove to you that in thus voting, I not only committed no crime, but, instead, simply exercised my rights, guaranteed to me and all United States citizens by the National Constitution, beyond the power of any state to deny. ”(Anthony, 1) is a quote from Susan B. Anthony’s famous “Women’s Rights to the Suffrage” speech that inspired change in our great country. This speech was the most compelling of texts because she used solid evidence to support her claim and she uses many different types of figurative language. The third, fourth, and fifth paragraphs were the most important in her speech. This emphasis on ‘We the people’ and not ‘We the white male citizens’ in her third paragraph leads me to my first point.
Literary Analysis: “A Worn Path” Eudora Welty uses many literary elements in her short story, “A Worn Path,” to allow the reader to stay engaged throughout its entirety. Although there are many literary elements present in this story, there are three that Welty focuses intently on. She uses elements such as imagery, symbolism, and motifs to draw the reader’s attention. It is important for an author to write their story in a way that can be understood but also enjoyed. In “A Worn Path”, Welty focuses in on the elements, such as, symbolism, motifs, and imagery and writes a story that has great meaning and can be discovered by the reader when looked at carefully.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, is an example of the use of diction. Mark Twain, the author, has the boys in the story have an out of pocket conversation. Diction helps the reader imagine the story as if it was they were the ones having this dialogue.

In detailing the events that led up to her change in perspective, she made note of the honeysuckle that covered the walls of the well-house, the warm sunshine that accompanied going outdoors, and the cool stream of water that she felt as she placed her hand under the spout. These details kept the reader with her in the moment as she felt something less simple, but still universal; the returning of a, “ misty consciousness as of something forgotten.” In using rich diction, she maintained a sense of intimacy with the reader which allowed her to call on personal details from her own life and theirs. Later in the passage, she described how, once the reality of language was opened to her, and she returned to the house, “every object which I touched seemed to quiver with life.” She had gone through a complete shift of perspective, one that, to her, was felt entirely through senses other than sight or sound.

The Contrast of The Story of an Hour While Mrs. Mallard is just starting a new life, so to say, for herself, her life she has known comes to an end. She is just able to become “free, free, free!” (57) when she loses her life. Kate Chopin uses contrast with the news Richard’s gave, the way Mrs. Mallard felt in the room and the doctor’s news to show how women perceived marriage in the 19th century in her story The Story of an Hour.
The portion of the book that consists of Charly’s manuscript is too long. This section is necessary to support the themes of identity and memory, but partway through I found myself unsettled and felt as though I’d been abandoned by the narrator. This could be remedied by breaking the narrator’s reading of the manuscript into two parts, with a brief return to the main story halfway through. The manuscript also included quite a lot of poetry, which I began to find a little tiresome.
