In the article, “College Pressures,” William Zinsser discusses the many struggles college students face while trying to focus on their studying. He convinces the reader of his point by using different types of rhetorical strategies. Zinsser’s usage of the rhetorical strategies such as getting straight to the point, quoting, paragraphing, the use of word pictures, and choosing a title was effectively done in his article to persuade his reader of the struggles faced by college students. The author did not waste anytime getting to the main point in his article, which is effective because it makes me interested in what he had to say.
The make of their clothing does compliment the curves of an ethnic female. I think they would be surprised that I am a
What I found most striking about “The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao” by Junot Diaz, is that when you take away the Dominican mother, the Dominican abuelita, the fuku , the Spanglish, and the cultural references, Lola and Oscar, appear to suffer the trials and tribulations we all do as teenagers. As Junot Diaz immerses the reader in their tumultuous lives from the Dominican Republic to Paterson, New Jersey, you discover that Oscar and Lola are teenagers navigating the same physical and emotional roads we all did growing up. Oscar does not want to die a virgin and Lola wants to be independent. The mother clamors to provide for her children just like single mothers everywhere. Oscar was a “social introvert”, (Diaz, 2007, p. 22), finding

For this task I will be presenting about Katniss Everdeen from the hunger games and how she is a tragic hero and I will be relating this back to the greek hero Oedipus. What makes a hero, a hero as stated by the reproject “Are people who transform compassion (a personal virtue) into heroic action (a civic virtue). In doing so, they put their best selves forward in service to humanity. A hero is as an individual or a network of people that take action on behalf of others in need, or in defense of integrity or a moral cause” (prezi.com). As you all know Katniss is the main character of hunger games and is identified as a tragic hero from the beginning to the end of the story.
III. a. Maya Angelou was an avid writer, speaker, activist and teacher. As a result of the many hardships that she suffered while growing up as a poor black woman in the south she has used her own experiences as the subject matter of her written work. In doing this she effectively shows how she was able to overcome her personal obstacles. Her autobiography “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (1970) tells the story of her life and how she overcame and moved forward triumphantly in spite of her circumstances.
In the Freedom Writers Diary, the authors focus on the topic of the reality of what they have to deal with in their everyday world. Their teacher Mrs. Gruwell inspired them throughout their high school years by teaching them that it is possible for each and every one of them to change. They write with an uplifting and hopeful outlook on the world even if it not realistic in their present circumstances. In their writing, they establish an effective use of pathos by writing about their own lives and how they connect to others and us by using the selection of detail, metaphors, and allusions. Through these devices, we come to the idea that even though teenager’s in today’s world are faced with many hardships, they do not have to succumb to them.
Her way of writing is very straight forward and she backs up what she says with history. Talking about the different time periods and how people thought at the same time. She compared different artists, male and female to one another, so that a total picture

Sixty years after the extirpation of wolves in the Northern Rockies and Great Plains of America, biologist and ecologist in Yellowstone National Park reintroduced wolves into a declining ecosystem that once thrived during their presence. The reintroduction brought immense controversy into the West and continues to stir outrage among anti-wolf groups. These anti-wolf supporters argue wolves are ruthless predators that cause destruction to natural environments and livestock. Conversely wolf advocates and scientists suggest that wolves are a keystone species that are essential to the natural regulation of our Western ecosystems. Although pro and anti-wolf advocates can agree that wolves have an effect on livestock, ungulate populations and ecosystems,
Gloria Anzaldúa’s “La Prieta” tell her struggles with identity by talking about prejudices she dealt with while growing up. These prejudices, such as colorism, sexism, and heteronormativity, were not only held by people outside her social groups but within them as well. Anzaldúa goes on to explain the way identity is formed by intersecting factors and not only one aspect of someone’s life therefore denying one factor of identity can cause isolation and self-hatred. The fact that Anzaldúa developed faster than is deemed normal the first struggle in forming her identity.
In Maya Angelou’s “Graduation” she spoke about a fictional character named Marguerite Johnson and her eighth-grade graduation. Anthropologist Edward T. Hall’s theory of high- and low-context culture helps us better understand the powerful effect culture has on communication. A key factor in his theory is context. This relates to the framework, background, and surrounding circumstances in which communication or an event takes place. The following highlights the problems facing low-context Americans when they interact with people from high-context cultures such as Japan in the movie ‘The Last Samurai’.
It is an honour to stand before you and have the chance to speak. Today, I want to talk about being a teenager. Being a teenager isn’t really easy. It is hard, harder than you can imagine. It can be confusing and frustrating.
