Dorian’s stability worsened over time especially when he saw James Van’s face in the window at the country house. The memories of everything replayed in his head like a flashback, overwhelming him, causing him to faint. Still at the estate, Dorian gets word that his friend murdered a man and was relieved that the man who died was James Vane. Thankful that James Vane would be out of his hair forever, Dorian vows to change by only doing good deeds. Figuring that the good will way out the bad and that if he continuously par takes in act of courteous, he’ll forget all about the depraved memories rolling around in his mind. Dorian attempted his first act of kindness and immediately ran back to the portrait to see if the image was modified with positive features. Instead of a positive feature being added, the picture made Dorian have a hypocritical smile. For some reason Dorian thought that if you do something positive then all your history gets deleted and that’s incorrect thinking.
