Imperialism is when a stronger, larger nation dominates a smaller or weaker nation politically, economically, and socially. Imperialism increased in the 19th century due to industrialization. European industry increased there need for cheaper raw materials and massive markets to sell new, finished products. Europeans also dominated the world with their advanced military weapons, to dominate Africa and other south pacific areas. The powder keg was a huge contribution to all the chaos leading up to the destruction of world war one caused.
American Imperialism Imperialism by the book is the policy in which stronger nations extend their economic, political or military territories. The time period where the US exampled imperialism was very important for our country because the US was able to grow with the new territories that were gained and the economic gain from the new market that were acquired. The spread of American culture was also a big concept during this time in the countries history. The United States exhibited imperialism between 1890-1920 through military strength, new markets, and cultural superiority.
Not only did the movement bring out people’s pride for their country, it also created a competition among European countries. As countries went to war with each other, they realized they needed more colonies and the conquering of African nations gave them an advantage. (doc 12) However, the strongest and most critical motive for imperialism was for economic purposes. In addition to nationalism, Europeans were also experiencing a period of industrialization.

Coupled with the economic struggles that were happening in India, Vietnam, and other countries, the problem of political power was growing. In Africa since the colonization only men of a high status could be part of the government. This was because places like Britain wanted people who were in power to be those that had the same beliefs as Britain.

In 1803, the United States of America had bought the Louisiana Territory, it was bought from France which had made the country two times larger. In 1819 Spain had given up their territory of Florida to the United States. President Monroe issued the “Monroe Doctrine” in 1823, its main purpose was to warn the European countries to not enter the Western Hemisphere. In order for America to achieve its goal of becoming an imperialist nation they had conquered other countries economically, culturally, and with a strong military in the late 1800’s.
