In today’s society, science is changing rapidly. With new advances in technology, math, and science, there is more availability for scientists to dig deeper into their field more efficiently. Even though it is great to see science changing by the day, some Christians feel the need to draw the line at some point. Advances in science can raise some controversial topics for Christians. Two such controversial issues are euthanasia and plastic surgery. Euthanasia can be seen as doctors taking God’s role by medically killing a person. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines euthanasia as the act or practice of killing someone who is very sick or injured in order to prevent any more suffering. There are two types of euthanasia, active and passive. Christian Nordqvist states, “Active euthanasia includes life-ending actions conducted by the patient or somebody else.” Active is when the patient decides or has already decided to be medically killed. Nordqvist defines passive as, “a mode of ending life in which a physician is given an option not to prescribe futile treatments for the hopelessly ill patient.” Passive euthanasia happens when the physician is put into the position to decide to take a patient off of medication that is keeping the patient alive. The most common pro is the psychological aspect of the surgery. For example, my aunt had a double mastectomy. After the surgery, her oncologist recommended the reconstructive surgery to help with the emotional impact that overcoming cancer can bring. She went along with the surgery and is now completely cancer-free. Some people get nose-jobs and a facelift to make them feel better about how they look. It is important to have confidence in yourself, but where should a person draw the line?
