Evaporation Experiment

In this experiment the scientist will be testing different liquids to see if all liquids evaporate at the same rate. The scientist will have water, orange juice, nail polish remover, Coke, a small cooking pot, and a stove. The scientist will boil all of the liquids and measure which liquids evaporated the fastest.

The science behind evaporation is when all of the molecules are rapidly in motion. Liquids evaporate due to heat, which makes the molecules in a liquid to move faster. The molecules in a liquid might transfer energy to another molecule. The molecules then, start to move even faster, until the molecules escape the surface of the liquid, evaporating into a gas. With the remaining liquid, the liquid goes back to normal temperature …show more content…

Coke can be boiled because heat will cause the Coke to evaporate like any other liquid. Even though Coke can evaporate and boil, after a while, when Coke is being boiled the coke melts and turns into sugar. Boiled Coke turns into a thick paste, also known as dew. In the experiment, Coke turned out to boil faster than the other liquids. Coke started to boil faster because Coke has dissolved gas in the liquid. The gas of the Coke, which is carbon dioxide, is rapidly released as soon as the gas is heated.

Nail polish remover is a liquid that is being used in the experiment. When nail polish remover is heated, the nail polish remover will start evaporating very fast. The polish remover will start to evaporate very quickly because is made of a chemical called acetone. Acetone is a substance that evaporates rapidly, because of the intermolecular forces of the substance. The intermolecular forces of the acetone are weaker than the forces of the water, so once acetone is heated the acetone will immediately start to evaporate due to the weak intermolecular …show more content…

The chemical formula of water is H2O, which is two atoms of hydrogen and one atom of oxygen, together the mixture of these atoms form water. The mixture of sugar has a chemical formula of C12H22O11, twelve atoms of carbon, twenty two atoms of hydrogen, and eleven atoms of oxygen. The mixture of citric acid has a chemical formula of C6H8O7, six atoms of carbon, eight atoms of hydrogen, and seven atoms of oxygen. The elements just listed are the main ingredients in orange juice, which may cause orange juice to evaporate differently than other liquids and water, since water contains only two atoms of hydrogen and one atom of oxygen
