Are you good at keeping secrets? The fictional novel “Every Last Word” written by Tamara Ireland Stone takes place in high school where the main character Samantha McAllister shows her daily struggle of dealing with a mental illness called OCD, which Samantha likes to keep a secret especially to her “close” friends, “What if I’m crazy?” she begins to think. This book report will discuss the aspects of the book and the author, also including my viewpoint of this novel.

She is put in between someone she pretends to be and someone she can openly be. At the same time, Sam and Aj begin dating but Sam finds it hard to tell Aj about her secrets. One day, Sam was seeking Caroline for advice about Aj but couldn’t find her, she asked Aj if he saw Caroline anywhere, but Aj didn’t know who she was talking about. Sam thought it was silly of him not to know who Caroline was until Aj told her that the Caroline she’s talking about committed suicide years before they started high school. It all started making sense as Sam realizes why she had to talk instead of Caroline and why it was always the two of them. “Feeling empty and cold, mourning the loss of my best friend like it’s recent and raw, as if she killed herself this afternoon and not eight years ago. I rock back and forth, scratching harder, crying and muttering ‘Caroline’ under my breath, over and over again. Like the crazy person I now know I am” this quote shows how Sam first reacted to hearing about Caroline’s death, believing she is crazier than she thought she was, and how the author used detail to describe to the reader what dealing with OCD is
