Everyday Use Mama Character Analysis

In the book, Everyday Use, the narrator, Mama, is a kind, soft spoken, and laid back woman. Growing up, Mama went through the Great Depression. During this time period, Mama learned how to make the best of everything she had, and how to put things to everyday use. Mama raised Dee and Maggie by herself, and she took on the manly work a father would normally do. Mama would do the hardy labor on the farm such as, butchering hogs and milking the cows. Mama is proud of her masculine work, and because of this, she doesn’t quite comprehend Dee’s materialistic way of life. Mama was a “big-boned woman with rough, man working hands.” Dee however wanted to live a lavish lifestyle. When Dee pulled up to visit Mama and Maggie, Mama knew at first glimpse
