Learning How to Invest Reflections
First Reflection
To begin investing, I needed to understand the core concepts. To do so, I watched the YouTube video “Everything You Need to Know About Finance and Investing in Under an Hour” by William Ackman. I found the video very helpful at explaining core finance concepts such as valuation and growth. I also learned what exactly a piece of stock is. Not to mention, I learned about dividends, which are distributions companies give out to their shareholders. Next, I read articles Mr. Stipp recommended me on Mr. Money Mustache's blog. I learned how to tolerate risk, not to put all of my “eggs in one basket” and effective strategies in investing. After, I viewed investing and personal finance videos by Tangerine.

As such, I need to understand risk. I read this article by Canadian Couch Potato to understand what level I should be comfortable with. Based on my positive experiences with Tangerine and the good things I have heard about their investment funds, I have planned to invest in Tangerine’s index funds when I become of age. The portfolio that will best suit my needs is the equity growth. The equity growth portfolio is most prudent in terms of long-term growth and return potential. I plan on keeping my savings for at least ten years, so I can tolerate a higher risk. After completing my research into the Tangerine investments, I gave them a call to ask a few questions. I wanted to know what the unit prices reflected, if there were any barriers from preventing you from taking your money out and what the representative thought of my portfolio selection. I finished the call with all of my questions answered and with a sense of security because I felt like I knew what I was doing for the first time.
