Human nature is often seen one way or another; evil or innocent. In the novel Lord of the Flies the author, Golding portrays human nature as evil due to power, which is true as seen through how people act in society and literature. In Lord of the Flies, Golding implies that human nature is inherently evil; when freedom arrives, common sense is driven away to violence. Golding implies this because everyone is seen to be evil at some point, only because power corrupts our minds. In Lord of the Flies, savagery takes over the boys that once used to be innocent; “Roger sharpened a stick at both ends” (Golding 190). Golding’s stance is accurate because he shows a lack of morals that were supposed to contain savagery in a civilization. After Jack’s tribe kill’s the pig, they put it on a stake and gathered around and chanted, “Kill the pig. Cut her throat. Spill her blood” (Golding 69). Golding illustrates to the reader how the boys are chanting and torturing an already killed pig. This is an example of how savagery and power corrupted the boys while being on the island. Golding illustrates the transformation that took place within these boys that changes them from civilized and socially accepted to amoral and uncivilized humans. One of the most well-known people who was viewed as wonderful had an evil human nature. Power corrupted him and the evil came out, “Columbus forced natives to work for the sake of profits” (Alicia Lee). Even throughout history dating way back we can see that human nature is evil as shown. Christopher Columbus let power win him over and he mistreated civilized people. He gained power and did whatever he wanted, he made them work as slaves by enforcing labor and when they died, he didn’t care.
