Then the states give funding to whatever they want and administer medical programs to the poor in line with federal standards. The eligibility has evolved over the years, originally it was just for the poor, however that has changed. Historically it has been the Categorically needy group that received the funding, however with the current medicaid system that has changed because the categories are Technically no more. “The poverty level was $8,350 for an individual, and $17,050 for a family of four as of the year 2000 (Wilson, ed., 2006). ” Medicaid covers the below income line of “Pregnant women, disabled, children under the age of six (Wilson, ed., 2006).” Most states have a leeway of coverage in medicaid funds. I would not make a change to this program because it supports women, breastfeeding or not and the recent rule change in 2014 made it so that they have access to healthier food like fresh fruit and whole grains. I like that over 8.5 million are supported by it at least once a month. This program is needed because women need the support after going through a pregnancy and having a kid and knowing that just because they don’t live in a fancy house they know that their baby is going to get fed the nutritious foods that it needs. This is also a fallback because if they don’t qualify for SNAP they still have a shot at getting WIC which is a relief for new
