Baptism is the introduction of a person into the church community and speaks of identification with Jesus Christ. Baptism is the first sacrament in the Catholic Church and through it we are reborn as children of god. When you are baptised you turn from your old life of sin to a new life with Jesus and accept him as your saviour. Water plays a significant role and is a powerful way of showing us that our sins must be forgiven. Baptism opens a door which gives us access to the other sacraments. When you are baptised you are immersed or have water poured over your head three times and have the words spoken “I baptise you in the name of the father, son and holy spirt”

A person however may only be baptised once in their life. The church prefers to do baptisms on a Sunday as that is the day the church community gathers together to celebrate the death and resurrection of Christ and as baptism is about being welcomed into the church community it makes sense to hold it when the whole community is gathered. The priest, parents and godparents will trace a cross on the child’s forehead that says ‘you belong to Christ’. You then gather round the baptismal front which holds the waters of baptism and the priest will ask what you wish for your child with the reply being ‘baptism.’ The baptismal promises are then said which are based on the Apostles Creed. The priest will anoint the baby with the Oil of Baptism which symbolises strengthening and the Oil of Chrism which symbolises The sealing of the gifts with the Holy Spirit. The priest then either immerses the baby or pours water over its head saying the words ‘I baptise you in the name of the father, the son and the Holy Spirit’. The baptism candle will then be lit usually by the Easter candle and this is held by the father who stands beside the child.
