A biblical philosophy of music is something that every Christian should have. Music is a very fundamental and important part of life. Music surrounds and influences people every single day. Music affects human behavior, moods, lifestyles, and even choices. It has a profound and significant impact on every single life. Present day culture is inundated with music. Sadly, the music that pervades today’s world is ungodly, wicked, and harmful to the life of the believer. Even the music that fills churches around the world has become increasingly more sinful and self-absorbed. In order to foster a musically spiritual environment, a Christian should establish a biblical philosophy of music.

Music is most certainly a language of the spirit and heart. Music is unique in that it can bypass the logic of the mind and pierce its influence straight to the spirit of the listener. This is most likely why Paul told the Ephesians to speak to themselves with certain types of music (Ephesians 5:19). Music is a language that affects a person’s mood and behavior. Therefore, one should surround himself with the music that fits the mood and lifestyle he should have, rather than the one he has or feels like having. Galatians 5 lays out first the works of the flesh: “…adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like… (Gal. 5:19-21)” The wrong types of music always communicate some or all of these themes! The angry, hateful, perverse, and sinful nature of the world’s music always results in these items. Any music that fosters any of these fleshly feelings should not be tolerated. How sad it is to think that music that communicates things that are fleshly and ungodly would be used in churches and Christian homes today! The worldly styles mentioned before are always surrounded by works of the flesh. For example, it was previously established that worldly music exudes sensuality; it is no surprise that different forms of sensuality are listed as works of the flesh. This is the case with the other fleshly works as well. As a Christian, it is simple to deduce that rock, rap, pop, and other modern styles are filled with these themes.
