A person’s musical preference can express their own identity and social grouping. In the article, “Is Popular More Likeable? Choice Status by Intrinsic Appeal in an Experiment Music Market” explains which our judgment can be altered by the status of the performer. The article explains the Matthew Effect which high-status people like celebrities, popular artists and other famous people is can positively change people’s view of the performant because of their high status. The authors used the Gould’s model of the Matthew Effect as an example. The Gould’s model is using transitivity to explore the effect of the power of status on specific members. The article talks about the experiment on the Matthew effect. The main experiment the article discusses is the Musiclab Experiment. Musiclab Experiment is four experiment using songs to understand the social influences. The experiment has over 27,000 participants. The Musiclab experiment using a website with various type of 48 songs. The experiments have participants rating based on a 5-star rating and downloading 48 songs. The authors defined gene as “conceptual tool most often used to classify varieties of cultural products, particularly in the fields of visual art, popular culture, video games, film, literature, and music” (Lena et al 1). They divided music into four genre types—Avant-garde, Scene-based, Industry-based, and Traditionalist. Each genre types represent the origin of the genre. Avant-garde genres is formed based on disliking music’s aspect and they are always discovering new type of music. These genres include punk rock and thrash metal. Scene-based genres are local like a community or neighborhood. These types of genres try to using innovative technology but not expensive. Scence-based genres include indie, and other genres.
