The Truth About Feminism Feminism first started in the mid 1800’s when two abolitionists by the names of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott organized the Seneca Falls Convention in New York. In the course of protest, Stanton drafted a “Declaration of Sentiments, Grievances and Resolutions” which had the purpose of achieving the “sacred right of franchise” or the “right to vote”. After Seneca Falls, waves of women’s rights quickly developed. These movements originally tackled the social and institutional barriers that limited women’s rights, such as family responsibilities, a lack of educational and economic opportunities and being voiceless during political debates. In today’s society, the word feminist is now considered to be the new “F” word. When most people hear the word feminist, they automatically think of an angry, bitter, masculine, unattractive man-hating woman who hates stay at home wives and tries to liberate all woman kind at the expense of men by emasculating them. The word feminist has been the topic of many conversations, arguments, and debates. But what really is a feminist? By definition, a feminist is a person who believes in the social, political, and economic equality of the sexes. Feminists can be male or female, it has nothing to do with how you look, what you wear, or how you behave and live your life. Before starting college, I wanted to be decisive on what major I would be taking up. But whenever I would research any possible careers, I would always find that most websites would always have two categories: “highest paying jobs”, and “highest paying jobs for women”. Though under both categories the career would be exactly the same, the woman’s salary was significantly smaller than the man’s. One article by the Washington Post, for example, shows the gap between male and female health workers, where male doctors made $50,000 more than female doctors per year.
