What is a feminist? There are many different categories of feminist from liberal to eco-feminism. Each with one common goal which is equality in social, political and economic fairness of the sexes. The core beliefs of a feminist are that women should be recognized and treated the same as a man, men and woman should have equal rights and opportunities, and women should be seen as both intellectual a socially equal as men. The first wave of feminism began in the mid 1800’s between the early 1900’s and this particular group were many of the women taking for granted and wanted the same opportunities that were given to men such as the right to vote. Majority of the women involved with the movement were also involved in other important movements crucial in the time period such as the Black civil rights movement, gay and lesbian movement, and anti-Vietnam movement and each group was fighting for the one common goal equality. Today now the label ‘feminist’ is examined now mild depending on the different levels of feminists. A liberal feminism aims for sexual equality and often reshape the political and legal views. A radical feminist believes that men should be eliminated from society in order to solve the differences and even going to the extreme that women needs to find an alternative way to have children so it can reduce the time they miss from their jobs. Socialist feminist focuses on the unequal pay grade between men and women and believes that liberation can only be achieved by working to end both economic and cultural sources or women’s oppression.
