Anyone with some level of education would have heard of the word feminism, but what truly is feminism and what were it is impacts on the world in general and on women in particular. In literary terms feminism is the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes (Merriam-Webster, 2017).In the 1960s there was a political movement lead by women in Britain and America who fought for the liberation and the rights of women. The movement consisted of women of all religious, educational, racial and social backgrounds. These women identified themselves as Feminists. The women in the documentary talked about above had done such an outstanding job at bringing awareness to the problems and educating women on their on their rights. However, their vision and their mission were not clear and that lead to the rise of many other groups within the movement that mislead the revolution and in return harmed women in return. Round about 1970 a new group of women raised and their ideology was that “MEN ARE THE ENEMY”. These women called themselves the revolutionary feminists. The women in this new movement were angry and fed up with men and that was their inspiration for their first movements. Sandra McNeill mentions their first public outlet, she says they went up to the microphone in central Birmingham and said “men are the enemy” (McNeill, 2015). Following this the separatists mad life for their members very strict and full of rules that needed to be followed. The members were constantly told that men were the enemy and they should not be interacting with them. Majority of the members became Political Lesbians which means they stopped having sexual contact with men and to satisfy their sexual desires they starting making love with women that were part of the movement. As of this lesbianism became very popular and women felt the pressure to become a lesbian because they felt like if they do not become lesbians then they were betraying women. Another action they did was that they all moved in with each other to build this support system with each other and completely block men out of their lives. They did this so that they could find their true souls and understand themselves as women; they believed that they could not have been in true contact with themselves while having men thoughts around. Inside these houses no men were allowed so women were advised to not give birth to male babies. For those who had children before they moved into
