One of those problems being the education received. “Over the past 50 years, there has been considerable progress in the educational attainments of African Americans, although they still lag behind the levels of Whites,” (Murry).
One of the most strived for things in life is academic excellence however the path to it is never easy. Author Thompson Ford’s article “How To Understand Acting White” outlines Stuart Bucks arguments about the irony of desegregation in education. A separate essay written by, Alfred Lubrano, “The Shock of Education: How College Corrupts” has similar ironies about the average college student. If Ford was to read Lubrano’s essay, Ford would come to a more complex conclusion by incorporating arguments and concepts from Lubrano’s essay. Ford may utilize Lubrano’s essay to expand on certain concepts such as the proximity effect, socioeconomics, and the level of education in top tier schools to further explain the “acting white” phenomenon from his own article.
Historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) are institutions of higher education in the United States founded primarily for the education of African Americans. Prior to the mid-1960s, HBCUs were virtually the only institutions open to African Americans due to the vast majority of predominantly white institutions prohibiting qualified African Americans from acceptance during the time of segregation. As such, they are institutional products of an era of discrimination and socially constructed racism against African Americans (Joseph, 2013). Mary Mcleod once said, “We have a powerful potential in our youth, and we must have the courage to change old ideas and practices so that we may direct their power toward good ends.” This quote comes from a woman whose true intentions were to establish, empower, equate, and implement black education. These were the goals of women educators during the civil rights movement which was during the years of Jim Crow laws. Jim Crow laws were racially segregated laws in the United States ranging from the years of 1876 to 1965, which is nearly 100 years. “America designed a Jim Crow system of education to deny access for to quality education to Negroes.”
They claim, “...students of color are showing that they feel disconnected from their respective schools, that implicit yet institutionalized racism creates emotional distance between them and their white peers and faculty. Being a black student on a predominantly white campus certainly, doesn’t guarantee that the student will develop mental-health issues. However, various studies suggest that perceived or actual discrimination can make it hard for students of color to engage with their campus in the way that their white peers do.” This explains how students sometimes feel like they don’t get enough support from their universities and this is dangerous because it can lead that student to drop out of school.

Racism refers to any action, intentional or unintentional that subordinates a person or group based on their race or skin color. Institutions, just like individuals can behave in a racist manner by adopting policies, practices, and procedures that exclude or favor individuals of a particular race thus denying another access to and quality of goods, services, and opportunities. Institutionalized racism is structured into social and political institutions. Examples of institutionalized racism include negative treatment of individuals to deny them health, employment, education, or housing benefits. In some neighborhoods, property value depends on the racial makeup of the people within that community.
