In the early years of Salem, Massachusetts, there were many speculations about witchcraft and different types of menacing events. There was the forbidden forest, said to be overcome by the devil and witchcraft, and some talk here and there of such things. Until one day, Abigail Williams came around to stir the pot. She decided that she wanted John Proctor all to herself, and she that meant that she needed to get Elizabeth, his wife, out of the way.
I think Abigail is to blame for the hysteria at the end of Act 1, because she accuses other people, lies, and tries to get what she wants. First, when Abigail says, “If they be questioning us tell them we danced- I told him as much already.”(18). Abigail is telling the other girls to lie to Reverend Parris about what happened in the woods that night he saw them. Fear is used to scare the girls into lying even though what they did was wrong, Abigail doesn’t want to lose the power of controlling and “witchcraft”. Secondly, Abigail is speaking to John Proctor saying, “Oh, I marvel how such a strong man may let such a sickly wife be-.”(24).
Crucible Essay Abigail was very questionable in the play. She could be very quiet. Being quiet actually turned out to be pretty powerful to her.
Gross corruption is when somebody is willing to procure anything out of greed or selfishness to gain money and power. One of many examples from “The Crucible” is Abigail Williams, Reverend Parris’s niece, she wants to be with John Proctor, but she is willing to anything to get rid of his wife, Elizabeth Proctor. Out of envy, Abigail accused Elizabeth of witchcraft, knowing that Goody Proctor would be executed. Envy is one of the toxins in our society today, and my assumption to get rid of envy is to praise each other, and be more grateful for what we possessed. Instead of bring another person down, bring yourself up, and work harder.
In the small town of Salem Massachusetts around springtime in 1692, many problems have occurred. But none more potent and dangerous than witchcraft. The buzz of the theory or sorcery happening in the town riled up the people who are ready to go witch hunting. However in a small twist of events, many women were falsely accused of being apart of the sorcerers and were left alone to face the consequences. But who could be responsible for these actions?
In the past during the Salem witch trials people weaponized the fact that courts would kill someone just for being accused. in the crucible by Arthur miller the characters always were dead set on witchcraft. If anyone ever said that you were practicing witchcraft you were integrated almost immediately, sometimes even whipped even with little to no evidence. But in all of this there were characters that were extremely targeted just because someone in power didn’t like them or just because they were jealous , here are some examples of characters that were targeted. In the play, the characters weaponize the witch trials to use against people they’re jealous of or simply for the fact they just don’t like them.
Greatest of The Guilty The character in The Crucible who was the most guilty for the events that transpired was Abigail Williams because of her sin of lechery that led to jealousy and damaged pride, her choice to lie rather than taking responsibility, and for judging good people as being hypocritical that had to be dealt with. As a result of Abigail’s lechery with John Proctor, she felt jealous towards Elizabeth Proctor and judged by the other townspeople. Her jealousy and pride made people targets during the witch trials. When talking to John she states, “She is blackening my name in the village! She is telling lies about me!
Abigail Williams’ Influence Is it okay for a person to lie and hurt other people just to keep him or herself safe? In Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible, Abigail Williams lies, a lot, to keep herself safe. Throughout the story, many people are accused of witchcraft. When a person is accused of witchcraft, it is very easy for them to get out of the accusation if they lie. The lies that are told shifts the belief of who knows witchcraft, and Abigail Williams uses those lies to gain influence over other people.
This casued many friendships in the community to be destroyed. It divided the people of Salem against each other. In What Were the Salem Witch Trials? It says “They pointed fingers at one another and cried “Witch!”
One of the most powerful human emotions is desire. Everyone is constantly trying to fulfill their own desires. A desire or passion may be so strong it can conflict with morality. In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, Abigail Williams, is driven to go against her moral duty and pursue John Proctor. She will stop at nothing to see her plan through.
John deals with Abigail and a dozen or so other tormented girls, as does the whole town. They cry witchery at everyone who has wronged them or defies them in any way, causing hangings of supposed “witches” that were innocent to anyone with common sense. These girls are widely believed by all, henceforth why Proctor proposes that the children are terrorizing the town; “Why do you never wonder if Parris be innocent, or Abigail? Is the accuser always holy now?... Vengeance is walking Salem...
The word Courageous can be used in a few different ways, but the way Abigail Williams uses it someone might not think at first it’s very bold or brave. But to get what she wanted she’d go to a pretty, far, extent to get what she wanted. This was to get John Proctor’s wife out of the way so she could replace her as well as get any dirt off of her name. Abigail has been working to get what she wants and her desire to get with John Proctor is what she wants, “I have been near to. murdered every day because I done my duty have pointing out the Devil’s people” (Miller 111).
A crucible is a difficult test or challenge; it can also be described as a place or situation that forces people to make a difficult decision. “The Crucible” by Arthur Miller shows many different situations where people are tested. Each test reveals someone's true nature, some were brave and courageous, while others were cowards and selfish. Rebecca Nurse and Abigail Williams were both tested, and something different was revealed about each of them. Rebecca Nurse was tested throughout the book, and it was shown that she is strong and stands for what she believes in.
In 1692, Salem went through a series of trials known as the Salem Witch trials. During this time, people lied to save their lives or told the truth and executed. Innocent people lost their lives due to witchcraft, saving loved ones, and/or hiding things from the court. You are probably wondering how this all came about. Well, Abigail Williams contributed the most to the witchcraft hysteria and should be held responsible for the imprisonment and execution of innocent people.
