McKenzy McVannel PBL 4/5 April 13, 2024 Abuse of power in history Over the course of reading George Orwell's novel Animal Farm, I came to the understanding that corruption of power can affect those who once had good intentions. This is important so that we acknowledge and recognize when people get too much power and start to abuse it in our, and other governments. First, in Animal Farm, a pig named Napoleon decides to lead the other animals into the revolution. After winning the farm, Napoleon retains the power to help the animals with certain decisions around the farm. All the animals trusted Napoleon, and with this trust, Napoleon started to do less and less and started to become a dictator with the farm. At this time, he started to become power-hungry and slowly became the only consul member. After a while, he called himself emperor and ultimately was assassinated because of his power. This shows that even the people of Rome can put someone in power who they think is good, and turn out to be bad. One last example of the corruption of power is in Russia today with Vladimir Putin. Putin was in the KGB for around 16 years and left in 1991. On December 31, 1999, Putin took over as president of Russia. Throughout the early 2000s he helped by rising oil prices and gas prices, and the economy improved during this time. In 2008 he stepped down as president for someone else to be president, but got back in power in 2012. He has been in power ever since, making sure that no one else goes into power. Many people have died who have tried to oppose him and tried to run against him. This shows that even if someone improves the country while in power, they can still become power hungry. Vladimir Putin, Julius Caesar, and even Napoleon from Animal Farm shows that even if a person, or animal, who starts in power for a good
