Dr. Chamberlain Insanity in Hamlet The mental stability of the main character, Hamlet, in William Shakespeare’s Hamlet has been the topic of many literary debates over the years. Hamlet’s character proclaims that he will, “put on an antic disposition,” in other words, act insane, in order to investigate his father’s death without receiving any suspicion as to how he knows the truth of the murder. The dilemma that Hamlet faces is that he knows of his father’s murder because he spoke with his father’s ghost. However, he fears that the ghost may not be his father; that it is instead, a demon trying to get Hamlet to avenge his father under false pretenses.

Even in the 21st-century society men are taught to keep their emotions bottled inside. Shakespeare 's play Hamlet took place in the mid 14th century Denmark. In life eventually all things fall apart once people lose something they once loved insanity is soon to follow as the person struggles to cope with such a great loss. One example of this is found throughout the tragedy Hamlet. Hamlet shows us that revenge is never the answer for if you dedicate your life to revenge at the end you still have nothing and in his case your have less. Hamlet had a love for his father like most sons do and once he hears or thinks that his new father was the culprit of his father’s death he loses his mind. The once great scholar became a maniac who only thought of revenge.
Insanity is an idea that has been examined for a long time in numerous mediums such as films, music, plays, and even works of literature. William Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” is no exception to that rule. Hamlet is one of Shakespeare’s most complex characters, and many scholars have been debating for centuries whether or not Hamlet is truly insane, or whether there is a particular reason for his odd behavior. In Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Hamlet merely pretends to be mad but in reality is sane.
It is believed that Shakespeare also uses the element of insanity to create drama, keep readers engaged or even to draw attention to mental health. Shakespeare uses advanced language and in order to keep readers or audience members engaged in the events of the plays insanity could be a useful tool. Some people believe that Shakespeare used insanity in his plays to bring attention to the issue of mental health. This is a respectable assumption, because several of the issues that Shakespeare felt strongly about often appear in his plays. However, although these could play a role in why Shakespeare used insanity as such a big element in many of his plays, insanity wasn’t used in his plays to solely provide one service and “it is unwise to accept or portray the symptoms of madness in Shakespeare as a purely medical condition” (Madness).
