Have you ever read the tragic love story about two lovers whose families were sworn, enemies? Have you ever read the tragedy where a strong Roman leader was murdered by his best friend? Chances are that at one point in time you read one or both of these plays that were written by the best poet known to England, William Shakespeare. William Shakespeare was christened on April 26 but it is believed he was born three days earlier, on April 23 which happens to be the same day he passed away. Shakespeare was a genius at expressing complex universal truths. Lady Macbeth appears to be a normal, loving wife, but she is actually very mean towards her husband. She also has very dark thoughts that are not normal for a person to have. This is evident in lines 54-58 when she says to Macbeth that: “...I have given suck, and know/ How tender ‘tis to love the babe that milks me:/ I would while it was smiling in my face,/ Have plucked my nipple from his boneless gums,/ And dashed the brains out…”. In the last battle, several different examples of appearances versus reality are being showcased. The soldiers use the tree branches as camouflage and so when Macbeth looks out of the castle it looks as if the forest is marching against him when it is just people making themselves look like a forest. Another example is when Macbeth plans to fake a surrender, however, when they walk into the castle he plans to attack them. This is evident when Macbeth ordered the servants to “Hang out our banners on the outward walls.” (Act V, Scene v, l. 1).When the witches gave Macbeth, their prophecies they were able to make it sound as if they mean one thing, but they actually mean it in a different sense, with clever wordplay. In Act IV, Scene i, when the apparition says to Macbeth “The pow’r of man, for non of woman born/ Shall harm Macbeth.” (l. 80-81).
