The cracks in the Macbeth’s “false face” begin to show after the murder, focusing on the symbol of blood concerning which Macbeth exclaims “Will all great Neptune 's ocean wash this blood Clean from my hand? No, this my hand will rather The multitudinous seas in incarnadine, Making the green one red.” (Pg. 183; 2.2.61). Macbeth recognizes the magnitude of his actions seeing that no matter how hard he may scrub there will always be a blood stain beneath the surface for having done such a terrible crime, something which will only build throughout the rest of the play. With this mindset, Macbeth becomes the one who takes the commanding role in the murder of Banquo, taking his own initiative by sending the murderers after his former friend and his son.
“Things are not always as they seem; the first appearance deceives many”. This quote was written by a Roman poet, named Phaedrus around 370 BCE, long before Shakespeare’s time. Thousands of years later, Shakespeare incorporates many deceiving motifs in Macbeth that put the words of Phaedrus into action. The use of ill-fitting clothes, sleep, and bloodshed is all examples of imagery used to illustrate that not everything that looks genuine is so. Just as clothes appear to fit well, they can be very uncomfortable at the same time.
Lady Macbeth very carefully selects specific manipulative words to persuade Macbeth into deceiving his peers and murdering Duncan. She displays a succinct plan on how the nights actions shall be carried out. Her first step is to convince Macbeth that the way he presents himself is how people will view him. Lady Macbeth achieves this by stating “Your face, my thane, is as a book as where men/ May read strange matters” (1.6). Lady Macbeth is saying that what Macbeth is expressing through the way he looks and acts is taken to be weird and abnormal.
Appearance vs. reality happens every day to everyone with just a look. Just a glimpse of someone's facial expression in the hall and you can tell you how things appear, but the reality could be monumentally different from the appearance. What I'm trying to convey is how no one knows someone's true feelings and thoughts by looking at the surface, their deepest desires, secrets, and struggles are locked away from the naked eye. Someone could easily be smiling but be dying on the inside, or someone can seem sane but truly be psychotic. An example of appearance vs. reality in Macbeth is how Macbeth appears to be a loyal friend to Banquo, but in reality he's plotting to eliminate him for his own benefit.

Macbeth didn’t start out evil in the play Macbeth but he became more evil throughout the book. He became more evil by killing his best friend Banquo, his king Duncan, and his fellow Thane Macduff.
