When appearances are deceiving, characters can be misjudged and not seen accurately. In some cases, characters can get away with whatever they are hiding without any form of consequence. In Roald Dahl’s Lamb to the Slaughter, Mary Maloney was misjudged due to her feminine and innocent character traits which led to her getting away with her husband’s murder. Just about every character in this novel has puts up a façade to hide who they really are from everyone else. Some characters you have to wait for the story to progress more to see that what the characters let you see is just a façade while others ,like Myrtle Wilson and Tom Buchanan, you can see right away. What is a false appearance? False appearances happen all the time. They can be defined as a facade, which is a false, superficial, or artificial appearance or effect. People try to hide their bad deeds by using a false appearance, attempting to make themselves look better than what said bad deeds make them appear to be. How someone is perceived often differs based on the person. Someone may think that a person is honorable and trustworthy, however someone else may think that same person is corrupt and untrusting. Depending on which side you are looking from, a single person could have many perceived personalities. This duality in character is often the factor that makes characters three dimensional. In the play Othello by William Shakespeare looking at characters in simply a black and white lighting takes away the three dimensions, leaving them very simply and easy to understand.
