Behind All Good Children There’s A Great Father In To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee Atticus Finch is the widowed father of Jem and Scout. Atticus is very different from the other fathers. Scout use to think he was boring father and was embarrassed because all her classmates' parents were way younger and cooler, but she soon learns that he is a great father. Atticus is a great father and role model because he is very strict, teaches good morals, and changes his kids for the better. Atticus is a great father because he is very strict and doesn’t tolerate bad behavior from his children. After Scout finally experiences school and is let down because she thinks her teacher is really mean to her. She got upset when Ms.Caroline told her Atticus was teaching her all wrong and she could never read again; Atticus then tells her to think about it from her point of view, “‘You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view-’” (39) Atticus is telling her that if Scout really put herself in her shoes she would have realized everything Ms.Caroline was doing was an honest mistake she's a new teacher and new Maycomb so cut her some slack. Scout doesn’t understand at first but later on when she realizes she judged Boo to quickly she starts to understand. He also teaches Jem that it is a sin to kill a Mockingbird. When Atticus gave Jem and Scout air-rifles he wouldn’t teach them how to shoot. “‘I’d rather you shot at tin cans in the backyard, but I know you’ll go after birds. Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit ‘em, but remember it’s a sin to kill a Mockingbird’” (119) Atticus tells Jem that killing a mockingbird is a sin because mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for people to enjoy. They don’t eat up people’s gardens, all they do is sing for everyone. They are the utter example of innocence, and that’s why it’s a sin to kill a Mockingbird. This helps mold Jem into a better person teaching him what's right and
