King Arthur and Catholicism
Many stories include themes of Catholicism. There are numerous examples of Catholic beliefs in the story, King Arthur and His Knights of the Round Table by Roger Lancelyn Green. These examples include the Holy Grail as the Eucharist, the knight’s quests as Catholic pilgrimages, and Arthur and Guinevere as Adam and Eve.
One example of Catholic theme in King Arthur is that the Holy Grail is the same as the Eucharist. As Catholics we believe that the Eucharist was served at the Last Supper. The Holy Grail was served at the last supper aswell, and the spear was used to pierce Jesus’s side. “And the bleeding speer hung once more in the air above it, the blood drops falling,”330. When the procession of the spear and the Holy Grail passed, it filled the Knights hearts and souls with love and joy and it made them complete. “Passing through the midst of them and filling with them the joy and the peace of the fullness of God.”278 In the same way the Holy Grail fills the knights with joy and peace, the Eucharist fills us with the Holy Spirit.

The Quests that the Knights take often lead to adventures that bring them closer to God. Oftentimes these quests require sacrifice. “This is my fate but I die worthily for the healing of this lady.”(316) Just like Dindrane sacrificed her life to save another lady, Martyrs sacrifice their lives for their faith which lead them to heaven. We strive to reach heaven and the knights of the round table hope to find the Holy Grail “‘I would be one of those!’ cried percivale, ‘none but I shall achieve the Quest of the Grail” 244.
