Joseph Russo Ms. Winter English I, section 14 3/17/2023 Coming of Age in The Odyssey Achieving goals can be a challenging and lengthy process that varies from person to person. In Homer's epic, The Odyssey, Telemachus exemplifies maturity and independence, enabling him to successfully fulfill Athena's objectives. As a result of his achievements, Telemachus experiences significant personal growth. Athena's primary goal for Telemachus was for him to come of age and mature like his father. This is evident when Telemachus acknowledges his need to live up to his potential and be more like his father. This shows how Telemachus is no longer hesitant to take charge of his own life and stand up for himself. Through his journey, Telemachus demonstrates how he overcomes obstacles and becomes the kind of leader his father would be proud of. In conclusion, although accomplishing goals can be difficult, Telemachus successfully fulfills this leads into another goal of hers that is becoming more independent. This is shown when Telemachus develops a sense of self-awareness and realizes his potential to mature and become more like his father. This is evident when he says, "Who has known, after all? One thing I do know - I crave my father" (2.113-114). This quote highlights Telemachus as he is questioning his identity and his ability to live up to his father's legacy. However, it also demonstrates his desire for personal growth and his willingness to take on the challenge of becoming a better person. As a result, he embraces Athena's goals and sets out on a journey to find his
