Community in the dictionary means a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common. Everyone belongs to a community or considers themselves a part of one, however communities tends to take away individualism. Anna Quindlen, author of “Commencement Speech at Mount Holyoke College”, spoke to the graduating class and delivered a speech on the effects of society on individuals. The purpose of this was to lead and guide the graduates into a happier life. Being true to self can only bring happiness, conforming to mold never designed to fit will only cause discomfort and unhappiness.
“There are many costs to modern society…but the most dangerous loss may be the community,” wrote Sebastian Junger in his book Tribe: On Homecoming and Belonging. The genius of Junger reveals that even with all of its benefits, modern society will crumble from lack of a community experience. “The beauty and the tragedy of the modern world is that it eliminates many situations that require people to demonstrate a commitment to the collective good,” he writes.

Polarization in America “[I] warn you in the most solemn manner against the baneful effects of the spirit of party generally”(George Washington). In 1796 our first president of the United States gave his farewell address. In his speech, he warns us of several different things that we, the American people, should not involve ourselves in. The first thing he advises us is the dangers of political parties.
The first instance I can think of when the subject of ethnocentrism is brought up about the US is how Americans generally belive that this is the greatest country in the world. We(Americans) tend to think that we are the best in everything just because we are American and if we lack in a certain area, we say that it was due to us not "caring." Another example of ethocentrism that is seen in the US is men not wanting women in certain areas of the work place, particularly where it is expected for men to work exclusively. Some American men, look at women more as subordinates instead of equals. My last example of ethnocentism is seen when in the low ranks of students in school.
Enforcing community thus strips away individual freedom. With individual freedom comes unique revolutionary ideas. This is the exact opposite of what tyrannical governments want. To destroy individualism at its core you must never let one be alone. Enforcing being public all the time is the best way to do this.
America on the world stage Imperialism, the policy by which strong nations extend their political, military, and economic control over weaker territories. One reason why European nations and Japan rushed to grab colonies was the desire for raw materials and natural resources. These colonial economies were examples of extractive economies. To expand and protect their interests around the world, nations built up their military strength.
Influencing the Community The way we think, act, and speak is directly related to the place and time we belong to. Thereafter, our own self is constantly being shaped by the society we live in. Whether we like it or not, it is happening without us even noticing it. Just think about it, from the food we like to the language we speak; it’s all because of the society we live in.
America has had a tumultuous existence, replete with war, progress, and ideologies. The most formidable of these is individualism, or the shift of society’s focus from the group to the individual and a growing emphasis on their personal needs and desires. Despite wide criticism, it has become the societal norm, spanning all generations, genders, races, and walks of life. Individualism, while indeed centered on the individual, is more accurately described as the changing and shifting relationship between the individual and society.
It is frustrating to hear these types of news everyday. Before even thinking about Pakistani people’s reactions to these news, I want to put myself in their shoes. I would definitely have a nerve attack. I cannot imagine what it will feel like hearing about people’s deaths everyday. It is hard for people like us to understand Pakistani people.
Just like the definition, we do interact with various kinds of individuals and we are also in a common location. The difference is that we don’t have the ability to interact with certain people, that is chosen, we don't have the ability to pick our location, you do. We can't make our community what we want it to be, we get to live in our community, that's it. You have all the freedom in the world, all the freedom to make your community what you want it to be, the freedom to be in a community with whom you want, be where you want, and again do what you want. In our community “everyone belongs to everyone else” (43).
